For the many Kean University senior undergraduate students seeking opportunities in graduate studies next year, performing well on the standardized Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) is a must. For many graduate programs, the GRE is a requirement, and for others, it's a strongly-encouraged addition to applications; in either case, the test is designed to show graduate schools that students are ready to perform in their rigorous programs.

On Thursday, Sept. 16, Greek Senate's annual Meet the Greeks happened virtually via Cougar Link for the first time ever, as restrictions on gatherings remain in effect due to the current health crisis. Meet the Greeks began at 7:30 p.m. and concluded at 9:30 p.m.

2020 marks a century since American women's fight for suffrage brought about the 19th Amendment. 2020 also marks a century since the last election that followed a devastating pandemic, and the introduction of millions of young Americans between 18 and 22 years old into the voting population. It will be the fifty-ninth presidential election since the nation declared independence, but only be the twenty-fifth in which all Americans will be afforded the right to vote promised in the Constitution. With every election cycle, but perhaps more so this year than ever before, the right and obligation of every American to vote becomes clearer.

The chaos of 2020 could not stop Americans from taking a somber moment to remember the events of 9/11. One of the ways the Kean community memorialized the precious lives that perished that day was by participating in the annual National Day of Service and Remembrance on Sept. 11 through virtual service events.

Kean sophomore Kobe Robinson is no stranger to getting involved and making a difference in the community. Already an ambitious member of several student groups and pillar of the student body, Robinson was elected Alternate Student Trustee for the Kean University Board of Trustees on April 16.

Kean University now, more than ever is working together to continue as normal in the midst of an ever-changing time. With the transition online, students are highly affected academically and socially as they are conducting their day to day lives from home now. Kean students and university departments are each coping with these transitions in their own ways.

Kean University announced on Thursday, March 19, that remote learning would continue through the end of the Spring semester in May. As students encounter a whole new set of stresses in their new, online study setting, students should pay close attention to their mental health.

On Thursday, Jan. 23 at 3:30 p.m., 11 freshman students were celebrated for their success in earning a 4.0 grade point average in their first semester at Kean University. The celebration took place in the lobby of the Center for Academic Success (CAS). The event was small, with only 6 of the 11 students being able to attend, but the General Education faculty and staff stood by to watch them receive their awards.

The culmination of student voter registration and participation has earned Kean University a Gold Seal and Best in Class Award in the national ALL IN Campus Democracy Challenge, going to show that each vote counts.

Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week is an annual event that takes place in November. It is typically the week before Thanksgiving and this year it falls on the week of Saturday, Nov. 16 and will end Sunday, Nov. 24. Kean University's Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) will be hosting the week's events this year.

Registering for courses can be a very daunting and stressful task. To help alleviate students' worries, the Office of Student Success and Retention is hosting Advisement Weeks, which will be held from Oct. 7 to Oct. 17. This will include various workshops and programming to ensure that students are on the right path for their major and know the services that Kean offers that can help them succeed.

At the beginning of every Fall semester, the Miron Student Center hosts Kean Day, one of the most exciting and informational events throughout the whole semester. On Sept. 13, from 1 to 4 p.m., Cougar Walk was lined with a variety of tables representing different aspects of campus life such as clubs, Greek organizations, educational departments, honor societies, off-campus vendors and more. This was a way for new and returning students to really get a look into all of the different ways that it is possible to get involved and truly enhance their college experience here at Kean.

The 2019 Leadership Institute Dinner was held at Galloping Hill Caterers on April 23 from 6 to 10 p.m. This event celebrated a year of hard work performed by members of the various leadership groups which include Transition to Kean (T2K) Bronze Leadership, Silver Leadership, Gold Leadership and Platinum Leadership, as well as the L.E.A.D. Program, which stands for Leadership, Education and Development. This event also recognized those graduating this year and those with GPAs over 3.45 with distinguished awards and various accolades.

At the end of every spring semester, the Kean University Greek Senate hosts Kean Dance Marathon (KDM), a fundraiser to support the Children's Specialized Hospital (CSH). As the years have progressed, Greek Senate has planned more events throughout the academic year to support KDM and make the donation at the end of the academic year even larger than ever before. This year they hosted the first FTK Color Run to raise more funds for the kids Sunday, April 7.

As one of the most diverse public universities in the state, Kean has many different events and programs dedicated to celebrating Black History Month. The first of these events was the Black History Month Flag Raising Ceremony and Kickoff.

Dec. 10 is known by many as Human Rights Day, a day to honor the adoption of the United Nations' Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), put into action after the UN General Assembly in 1948. This day also marked the declaration’s 70th anniversary, an opportunity to reflect upon the continued importance of human rights activism around the world.
