The transition to remote learning was difficult for many faculty and students during the spring semester of 2020. The COVID-19 pandemic happened suddenly and many were not prepared to continue their education remotely. Students were expected to quickly adapt to this “new norm,” while trying to balance the changes that were going on around them. Daniel Armah and Rebecca Obeng highlight their experience as virtual students and also discuss the hardest part about learning from home.
Involvement is a vital aspect of the collegiate experience for students. It allows students to learn more about topics that interest them while making connections with peers and staff. At Kean University, one of the main hubs of student involvement is through the Involvement Center.
Who are the Cougar Volunteers? Cougar Volunteers are a representation of Kean faculty, students and staff. These are the heroic individuals committed to volunteering their services for Kean University as well as surrounding communities.
First announced in July 2020 by President Lamont Repollet, the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion was created to push for a stronger Kean community. They aim to make Kean University a fair and equitable community through comprehensive and strategic diversity programs. The Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion is dedicated to supporting and promoting representation and inclusion all throughout the Kean University campus.
Faith can play a role in a person’s worldview while helping them to feel grounded and stable. In a new environment away from home, Campus Ministry helps students feel at peace.
In March of 2019, Kean University established the Cougar Pantry to help combat food insecurity among current graduate and undergraduate students within the Kean campus community. This organization is called The Cougar Pantry.
One Stop is at Kean University to help both newly accepted and returning students navigate their collegiate experience. They offer an abundance of resources and help pertaining to information on registration, enrollment and more.
Career Services is a department at Kean University that is centered around helping students and alumni grow professionally. Their main goal is to help students launch their careers through defining their goals and acquiring fulfilling professional experience. They have been able to aid students in many ways such as hosting workshops, helping students get internships, advisement and more.
Kean has had many successful students enter the university. Their involvement really shows how dedicated they are to making a difference on campus which will shape them beyond college. Getting involved in a Greek-Letter organization also helps students find their true calling while making new friends and lifelong connections.
Walking onto Kean University’s campus, it used to be filled with students and faculty, rushing to classes or taking time to sit and talk with peers. The area with the biggest foot traffic is the Nancy Thompson Library Learning Commons (NTLC).
The spotlight is earned by those who take opportunities to inspire others. Being a student leader and a member of the arts community can be time-consuming, but rewarding, too. People like Spenser Williams make sure to use all of the opportunities at their disposal to establish themselves and their projects. It is also students such as Williams who inspire a new generation of Kean cougars with their involvement.
Getting involved and making a difference really has its perks. The benefits include networking connections, experience to put on a resume, and making lifelong friendships. Rachel Rosales, a freshman at Kean, is already making the most of her college experience and cementing a legacy for years to come.
It is important to make a positive impact on people. In life and especially during times of need, it is also important that people use their leadership skills to inspire a new generation in achieving their goals. Students such as Naomi Guerrero have continued to lead as a positive example to the community while working remotely as part of the Jumpstart program at Kean.
The Freshman Class Elections, held through Student Organization, recently transpired, leading Jazaan Walsh to become the Class of 2024 president.
Seniors Melissa Tito, Kedemah Reid, Yash Patel, Gisell Padilla and Melissa Ostrander, from the Robert Busch School of Design have won major mentorships with top advertising agencies through the renowned One Club for Creativity.
The importance of networking is essential during one's college career, especially when the time comes to look for a job. However, with the right connections, the best opportunities tend to come by. For students such as Jorge Morales, some opportunities tend to have exclusive perks attached to it such as doing an internship across the country in California.

For the majority of Kean students taking remote classes, the process has come with advantages and disadvantages. However, there isn't a shadow of a doubt that they are making the unexpected shift work for them. One student is using it to his benefit.
