Black Leadership Union (B.L.U.) seeks to build an environment that welcomes the encouragement of multicultural diversity. It consists of five e-board members: President Shannon Assing, Vice President Vanessa Hubbard, Secretary Keiana Curry, Treasurer Christian Pemberton and Director of Public Relations Dominique Thomas.

As an institution that encourages student involvement, Kean University houses over 160 clubs and organizations that allow students to express their interests and missions on campus. Through the Involvement Center located in the Miron Student Center (MSC), Room 303 students are aided in the process of becoming a recognized group.

The Early Childhood Education Club is an organization that aims to help future teachers further develop important career skills, such as communication and leadership, outside of the classroom. Created only two years ago, it is one of Kean’s newer clubs, but it still has established itself as a resourceful niche for anyone interested in education, working with children and personal development overall.

Delta Rho is the Kean Chapter of Kappa Delta Pi, International Honor Society in Education. The Delta Rho chapter was established Feb. 19, 1938 by Florence Stratemeyer, Ph.D., with help from William Bagley, Ph.D. The honor society strives to prepare future educators in reaching their full potential by connecting them to resources, opportunities and other professionals.

The college experience can vary between each and every student not only at Kean, but all around the world. What differentiates these experiences is what students choose to do with their time in university. Being involved in a variety of clubs and organizations makes a student feel connected to their campus community and helps with different aspects of their career. The Kean Ocean campus first opened in 2006, making history for Kean University and Ocean County College. For most student-athletes, their rookie year playing a college sport is spent more on the bench than the field. However, for soccer player Felipe Lucas, freshman year established him as one of the top players in his conference and one of the most valuable players on his team.

Mary Bystrycki, a freshman studying exercise science, is also passionate about her goalkeeper position within Kean University's Women's Soccer team. Since she was five years old, she has been immersed in a life of practice and dedication toward this sport. With a mindset to continue on, Bystrycki won't stop playing because she appreciates the game and opportunities she achieves through this sport.

As a crucial member of the field hockey team, Jenna Patrone had a very successful season this fall, ending the season with 28 points, 98 shots, seven saves and 12 goals, which included six game-winning goals. Her exceptional performance during the week of Oct. 29 earned her the title of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week. Moreover, Patrone was accepted into the Longstreth/National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) Division III South Atlantic All-Region first team as well as the NHFCA Division III All-American third team.
