Hunger and Homelessness Awareness week is an annual event that takes place in November. It is typically the week before Thanksgiving and this year it falls on the week of Saturday, Nov. 16 and will end Sunday, Nov. 24. Kean University's Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) will be hosting the week's events this year.

One of the best times to celebrate being a Kean Cougar is during Homecoming, where students, staff, faculty, alumni and families gather together to cheer on the Kean football team. To get the community excited for the day of Homecoming, many events are planned leading up to the actual Homecoming event. This year, there will be a Homecoming Roller Skate Party to kick off the weekend of fun-filled festivities.

There is a great and rich history behind harvest time, autumn and the celebration of Halloween. For students of Kean University, there is no better place to celebrate October festivities than at Liberty Hall. The Liberty Hall Museum and Academic Center has a full lineup of autumn and Halloween inspired events for the local and Kean community to be immersed in the season and surrounded by history.

Registering for courses can be a very daunting and stressful task. To help alleviate students' worries, the Office of Student Success and Retention is hosting Advisement Weeks, which will be held from Oct. 7 to Oct. 17. This will include various workshops and programming to ensure that students are on the right path for their major and know the services that Kean offers that can help them succeed.

Student Organization of Kean University (Student Org), the full-time undergraduate student government at Kean, has released their Fall 2019 bus trip calendar. Whether you like history, hockey, Broadway shows or paintballing, Student Org has a trip for you this semester. Kean student tickets for the bus trips range in price from $15 to $25, offering students the opportunity to experience these trips at the fraction of the cost. Most trips also allow Kean students to being non-Kean student guests, but for $10 more than the student price.

Beginning Friday, Oct. 24, Kean University will begin its weekend of celebrations for their annual Homecoming. This is a time where students, alumni, faculty, staff and their families all come together to show their Kean Pride, and there is no better way to celebrate than with the chosen theme this year: Cougar's Climb Higher.

With graduation season approaching once again, students are preparing to wrap up classes, say goodbye to their friends and get ready to head out into the world and put the knowledge they acquired in class to good use. Before any of this can happen though, student's need to be sure they are ready to apply for graduation. This process can be long and tedious if one does not know how, when or where to start applying so here is some information to help with getting started.

Throughout the month of October, Kean University rallies together to help spread awareness and raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. This month is dedicated to the millions of individuals around the world that are affected by breast cancer. To honor those affected, multiple groups and departments on the Kean campus are holding events that bring the campus community together and to help support the cause.

This upcoming Sept. 25, the Human Rights Institute (HRI), located in the Nancy Thompson Library Learning Commons, is holding their Opening Reception for the gallery that will call the HRI home for the fall semester. The gallery is called "Tragedy & Tribute: Art Illuminates Ireland's Great Hunger." The Ireland's Great Hunger Museum at Quinnipiac University is loaning the exhibit to the HRI until December.

As the fall semester moves along, spring registration is becoming more and more important. It has started to reach that time when students must begin to think about what classes they will want to take for the upcoming spring semester. For some students, this may be their first time registering, and others may have forgotten the process that takes place before and during registration. College life has so much more to offer then just registering for classes or experiencing living outside of home for the first time. Every day there are many ways for students to get more involved and engaged in the campus community by joining or starting a club, attending events, watching a theater performance, going to a sporting event and so much more. Of course, with all these options, students can feel overwhelmed with where they should start. That is why Kean University has places like the Involvement Center and their events like the Involvement Games to help students out.

With the beginning of Fall approaching, so approaches the dreaded flu season. To combat the incoming flu season, Student Health Services urges students to engage in the New Jersey College and University Flu Challenge, sponsored by the NJ Department of Health. Students are encouraged to participate in this challenge to help spread flu awareness and increase vaccination rates among New Jersey college students.

Kean Day, an annual event here at Kean University, is fast approaching. This year, it will be taking place Friday, Sept. 13 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. along Cougar Walk and will be hosted by the Miron Student Center. Anyone searching for a new club or organization to join or just looking to meet some new people is encouraged to come over and enjoy the day.

This year's Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2019 and as it draws closer, it becomes more imperative that everyone comes out to vote. Unfortunately, the process of voting can seem exhausting for first time voters. The first step in this process is registering to vote and while many people would like to register, many do not know how or where to do so. That is where the Kean community is stepping in to help. The Community and Volunteer Services, Human Rights Institute and the Lesniak Institute will be hosting voter registration tables leading up to Election Day to help assist the Kean community in registering to vote before Election Day.

Kean University always seeks to find new ways to get students excited and prepared for the new semester. One way they plan to do this is through the annual Cougar Kick-off, which is a calendar of various events throughout the month of September to help students get involved and ready for the upcoming year.

One of the most exciting events at Kean every semester is Meet the Greeks, which is hosted by the Greek Senate. This is an event intended to inform the Kean community of the Greek Letter Organizations on campus and the efforts that they make to enhance the community, as they are very involved on campus. This year, Meet the Greeks is taking place on Wednesday, Sept. 11 from 5 to 10 p.m. in Harwood Arena.

According to the Food Aid Foundation, 795 million people in the world do not have access to enough food to live a healthy lifestyle. In New Jersey alone, 13 percent of people are food insecure, according to End Hunger NJ.
