The Cougar’s Byte is produced by the Student Life Media Team that develops content to engage with students, faculty and staff on topics related to student life at Kean University. The Cougar’s Byte covers campus events and issues of interest and significance to the Kean community. Undergraduate students assist with making all decisions related to its publication, including making assignments, reporting, writing, taking photographs, copyediting, designing layouts and disseminating content throughout the campus community.

The Student Life Media Team office is located on the Union Campus in the Miron Student Center (MSC), Room 313.
The Student Life Media Team produces content for the Cougar’s Byte during the fall and spring semesters by working together as a team. Everyone is committed and understands the role of teamwork.
All team members must work 12-20 hours per week (eight hours in-office) during the semester to perform the duties and tasks outlined in the job descriptions. Positions work under the immediate supervision of the Director of Communications & Marketing, Student Media Coordinator and the designated team manager.
All team members will collaborate with co-workers within the Student Life Media Team including assisting in coordinating the preparation of the features, writing, editing, designing materials, social media posts, taking photos and videos, etc. You will also assist in tasks outside of your primary role and in support of the Office of Communications & Marketing.
As student leaders part of the Division of Student Affairs, students must attend the Division training in August 2024 and represent the team at various events throughout the year. Students will also need to volunteer for 10 hours per semester outside of working hours.

Student Life Media Team is comprised of the following positions:
Managers
The Managers (5- Senior Editor, Graphic Design, Photography, Social Media & Videography ) work with staff members to generate story ideas, assign articles and content, edit articles for publication, create graphics and social media posts, photography and video assignments, provide training and assistance to staff members for the Student Life Media Team. These students are generally experienced members of the staff and upperclassmen.
Writers
Writers assist the Senior Editor, and are responsible for developing, preparing, writing, fact-checking, and reviewing articles for student media publications. Published articles must reflect information from interviews, observations, and online resources. All writers are expected to produce two articles minimum per week. A certain degree of creativity, latitude, and editorial experience is required.
Graphic Designers
Graphic Designers assist the Graphic Design Manager, and are responsible for creating advertisements, preparing page layouts, and producing illustrations and infographics. Designers may assist with maintaining website production, social media, and university screens.
Photographers
Photographers assist the Photography Manager, and are responsible for capturing campus activity, working with photography equipment, editing images, and creating digital content and advertisements. Photographers may assist with maintaining website production, social media, and university screens.
Social Media Assistant
Social Media Assistant assists the Social Media Manager, and are responsible for developing, preparing, writing, filming and editing content for student media channels. The Facebook and Instagram pages should have daily content posted, Twitter promotion of featured articles and TikTok post a minimum of two videos per week. A certain degree of creativity, communication and media knowledge, writing and editorial experience is required.
Videographers
Videographers assist the Videography Manager, and are responsible for filming campus activity, working with video equipment, editing footage, and creating digital content and advertisements. Videographers may assist with maintaining website production, social media, and university screens.
