People are born with a rhythm known as the heartbeat. The heartbeat uses its patterned movements to pump blood throughout the body. While heartbeats contribute to health, music is another rhythm that can enhance one's quality of life.
As defined by the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, music is vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony. Many find music to be a form of expression and something to be appreciated by its listeners.
Music is a multi-faceted tool that can be used to elevate moods, enhance focus, and help those with depression or personal distress. Students who listen to music have seen changes in their perception of life, values, confidence, and social relationships. For Psychology Major Abisola Abebefe, she found self-confidence in "Telfy" by Maiya The Don, a song with big presence on TikTok and YouTube.
"It makes me feel good because she’s plus-size and she helps me feel better about myself as well," said Abebefe. "It reminds me that my clothes look good because I’m in it."
People listen to music for a variety of reasons. However many students, like Justine Alston, listen to music that makes them feel good.
"'Sunday Best' by Surfaces," said Alston. "The words have affirmations about feeling better and, once you sing it enough, you forget all your worries."
While some have their absolute favorite songs, others have difficulty choosing just one. Some students may not have a preferred song, but they do have a favorite artist.
"I really like Che Ecru," said Bria Miller, desk assistant at Miron Student Center. "He just has a lot of different vibes for his music, but it usually puts me in a good mood no matter what."
"I usually listen to Harry Styles." said Student Courtney Rickert. When listing a favorite artist, Rickert stated that the vibe of Harry Styles's music is comforting.
The narratives of these students truly exemplify how music can have a unique purpose for every individual. Amongst the hundreds of music genres, there are tunes that can appeal to anyone.
Kean encourages students to explore their musical interests through clubs and activities. On Cougar Link, there are events and organizations that relate to music and performing.
Students are free to listen to the "Feel Good" playlist created by The Student Life Media Team. All of the songs are comprised of suggestions from the Kean community. On the playlist, students are sure to discover new songs and hear some familiar tunes.
