Kean University is dedicated to the safety of all students, staff and faculty. On campus there is a fully functioning police department with law enforcement and security services 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Located in Downs Hall, the police department maintains a K-9 unit and protects and serves the Kean community following the three values "Integrity. Courage. Respect".
They oversee any problems on campus, such as a disturbance call to locked classrooms. Distinguished for being at the scene in under five minutes, students should feel safe on campus. The Kean University Police Department offers a range of services that help support their job to keep the community safe.
Campus Alert is a required notification service for Kean students, staff and faculty. The alert system notifies about campus safety measures, closings, and warnings for everyone at Kean to be aware of what is going on and ensure their safety. Throughout the campus there are blue telephones for emergencies, but also for safety use. The phones have buttons that would connect them right to the campus police department. They can be used to report suspicious activity, emergencies, and if you want an escort to your car.
Safety escorts can be requested at any time of the day while on campus. Escorts are provided on a first come first serve basis and may be conducted by a security officer or campus police officer. The response time is around 15 minutes, which may vary depending on active situations that may have the department's attention.
As a part of the Campus Safety Checklist, every student must sign up for Campus Alert. To do so, visit the web page for the checklist information on the Kean University website. This checklist is made mandatory to truly ensure that all students have taken steps to avoid problematic situations before they happen.
Also following the Campus Safety Checklist, the police department overlooks parking decals with the Parking Services Unit. It is required that every student either register their vehicles and get their parking decals or they must opt-out. Freshman resident students are not allowed to bring vehicles on campus without Residential Student Services approval. Students may not park in yellow spaces, as they are for staff and faculty. For more information on parking policy and regulations, contact Parking Services located in Downs Hall at (908) 737-4810 or emailing parking@kean.edu.
