As part of its Earth Week celebration, the Earth Science Club will host Uniting Jersey for the Global Goals along with New Jersey Higher Education Partnership for Sustainability (NJHEPS), April 18 from 6 to 9 p.m. on the sixth floor of the North Avenue Academic Building, to teach the public about the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals.
The event will begin with opportunities to network followed by a presentation from keynote speaker Claudia La Rue who is a representative from the United Nations. Dinner will also be provided concurrently with round table discussions. To go with the theme of the 17 goals, there will be 17 tables which will feature a discussion on a specific goal.
The Uniting Jersey for the Global Goals event will be dedicated to learning the United Nation's 17 Sustainable Development Goals which are:
- No Poverty
- Zero Hunger
- Good Health and Well-being
- Quality Education
- Gender Equality
- Clean Water and Sanitation
- Affordable and Clean Energy
- Decent Work and Economic Growth
- Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
- Reduced Inequality
- Sustainable Cities and Communities
- Responsible Consumption and Production
- Climate Action
- Life below Water
- Life on Land
- Peace and Justice Strong Institutions
- Partnerships to Achieve the Goal
These goals were created in September 2015 as part of the the United Nation's General Assembly's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The agenda was created with a focus on establishing goals that would be attainable for everyone. As a result, the goals are obtainable even for persons with disabilities and specifically includes persons with disabilities 11 times.
The Earth Science Club hopes to educate guests on these 17 goals as well as give applicable advice on what students can do everyday to accomplish them.
Part of the United Nation's initiatives are the promotion of the goals and creation of networks between people which will both be executed at the Uniting Jersey for Global Goals event.
The Earth Science Club and NJHEPS are already anticipating about 140 people from all over New Jersey and have less than 10 spots left.
The full Earth Week Celebration takes place April 16 to April 21. Earth Science Club will also be hosting the following events:
