The musical, Pippin, will be presented by Kean University's Theatre Conservatory from Feb. 16 to Feb. 24 at Kean University's Wilkins Theatre.
Pippin follows the story of a young prince named Pippin as he is led by the Lead Player and a troupe of actors through life's various challenges. The audience can relate to Pippin's pursuit for the meaning of life and his attempt to fulfill his unknown destiny. The remarkable story is further enhanced by the use of powerful music, song and dance.
Pippin features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz as well as the book by Roger O. Hirson. The musical was originally directed and choreographed by Bob Fosse and debuted on Broadway in 1972. Pippin has since won an impressive total of nine Tony Awards.
Kean University's rendition of Pippin will be played by 24 current Kean students. Notably, an actress will play the role of Lead Player. The musical will be directed by Ernest Wiggins, an associate professor of theatre at Kean University, who remarks that, "Pippin is a coming of age story; there's the power of politics, sex, love and making potentially life-changing decisions. Pippin, like many college students, is just trying to find out this maddening thing called life. There are many aspects of this musical that cast members and audience members alike can relate to."
Pippin will also benefit from choreography by Aimee Mitacchione, musical direction by Jack Bender, scenic design by Lauren Mills, lighting design by Theatre Conservatory student Danie Johnson and costume design by associate professor of theatre, Karen Lee Hart.
