Freshman Class Election Results: Keeping It Fresh!

Paul Walker, Class President and Business and Accounting Major

Petruce Jean-Charles, Editor

Having the title of Freshman Class President, Vice President, Treasurer or Secretary is an honor that allows each student to accomplish goals that are suited for the Kean community.

President Paul Walker who is studying business and accounting, Vice President Alex Hechavarria who is studying politcal science, Treasurer Chevelle Ogbonna who is studying accounting and Secretary Alyssa Edgar who is studying psychology make up the Student Organization Class of 2021.

Being a part of Student Organization is a huge responsibility in order to succeed and each of the elected candidates understand this very well. When asked why they applied for each position Walker, Hechavarria, Ogbonna and Edgar all agreed that it was an interest that stemmed from high school and has traveled with them in their college career.

Walker: The reason why I wanted to become freshman class president is to help the freshman class with any problem they are having. Also, becoming president will look really good on any resume.

Hecchavarria: I wanted to become Freshman Class Vice President because I had already had the opportunity to be Elizabeth High School’s Student Government Vice President, and it was eye opening. I had been both captain of my Mock Trial Team, and Moot Court which gave me a sense of leadership and responsibility. I have always been involved with school, hosting pep rallies, and events and I wanted the freshmen class to not be afraid or anxious of entering the university. I wanted them to be excited for what’s to come! So I thought why not run for Vice President? I’ve held leadership positions in the past, I want to be a part of Kean’s growth just as I was part of Elizabeth High School’s.

Edgar: Well in high school I had a secretary position in a club I was in and also being a commuter, I wanted to find a way where I could be involved on campus so that's why I ran. I also think the election turned out well. I feel like the students elected the right officials. The president, vice president, and treasurer are all so nice and they are very passionate about making the campus even better.

When asked how each presidential official planned to accomplish and implement their goals each person emphasized the importance of working as a team. With the teamwork it can be beneficial for change.

Walker: I feel like the election turned out very good because the people who ran with me also won. The things I plan to accomplish as president is to help find a way to keep the freshman class grades up, and lower the drop out rate for my freshman class.

Hechavarria: I am relieved as to how the election turned out. The waiting period for the results had me stressed because I had worked very hard campaigning and I really wanted the position. I am glad of how this election turned out. My fellow leaders and class representatives all seem responsible and dedicated. It is important for the students to be involved with the university and feel welcome, because we should all be proud and have school spirit. I’m excited for the fundraisers and events to come, and I hope that all of the students at Kean University enjoy them.

Edgar: As secretary and also a commuter, I want to be able to bring more activities that will interest not only residents but commuters to want to be a part of so commuters have even more reason to stay on the campus longer. I plan to implement these goals in the meetings that I will have with my team so they will see the benefit of having such events for the purpose of bringing all aspects of the campus closer together.

Each and everyone of the officials elected for the class of 2021 understand that it takes a team effort, dedication and motivation to get things done.

Walker: I plan to implement these goals by getting more study lounge on the campus. I am very happy that my class was able to elect a grate freshmen e board.

Hechavarria: I plan to implement these goals by bringing the school community together such as; hosting fundraisers for any awareness, and possibly create study groups for specific subjects, not necessarily tutoring. One thing that really brings students together is being able to do work around each other and also enjoy each other’s company. It is my goal to have the freshmen class grow as one. We all have our own goals and aspirations and we should support and give each other a helping hand when necessary. I want all of the class representatives, my fellow Leaders, and myself, to be approachable to any one whom has any concern or idea, because at the end of the day, we represent Kean University.

Edgar: Once again, I feel the team that I have been given has already been so amazing and I think you can expect some pretty nice things to come from us for this semester and the next.
