The Outdoor Adventure and Recreation (OAR) Club at Kean University is a non-funded student organization that plans outdoor events, as well as indoor activities, for students who do not have the time to create these ideas themselves.
The OAR Club usually meets every other Monday during college hour in Bruce Hall room 204 (B-204). During meetings they hand out and collect waivers for upcoming events, and get students moving even if they're indoors. If anyone is interested in attending their events, students must sign and hand in a release and indemnification waiver.
On October 2, 2016, the OAR Club went hiking at the Watchung Reservation, where they met at the Trailside Nature and Science Center located in Mountainside, New Jersey. Their upcoming events this fall semester include a Treetop Adventure Course that will take place at the Turtle Back Zoo located in West Orange, New Jersey, and canoeing at the Cranford Canoeing Club located in Cranford, New Jersey.
Amanda Montealegre, OAR Club President, senior biology and education double major, expresses positive energy regarding her club.
"The main purpose of OAR, and our upcoming event, is to get people going. People want to do these activities like ice-skating, rock climbing, hiking and so much more--yet, they never get the time to do this on their own," said Montealegre. "They wouldn't go out of their way to do this, so we pick out a time and day and even get group discounts."
Admission for the Treetop Adventure Course is $28 and students can RSVP through Cougar Link. The course is a world class aerial obstacle course, which offers 30 unique challenge elements with an average run time of 1 to 1.5 hours. Their redesigned zip line measures over a football field in length and stands at about 40 feet. A Participant Agreement Form can be found on their website and should be filled out before arriving at the course.
During this event, students should be mindful to wear athletic clothing and bring their own snacks and drinks to stay hydrated during the course.
Montealegre advertises their events early, to people who do not check Cougar Link frequently. She makes sure that the students are aware of her club, especially during huge events like New Student Orientation (NSO) or Kean Day.
"I'm hoping and aiming for a honest and transparent club, because we're a very open club," said Montealegre. "It keeps the club interesting and fun when they're open and honest. I don't like it when clubs guilt you--so I say if our members want to go to our events, they go. If not, then don't."
OAR hosts bake sales that are approved and decided by everyone in their group. Usually, if a member is struggling financially, the OAR Executive Board divides some of their profit to help that member attend events.
"I hate if someone's limiting factor is money," Montealegre points out. "Our club is open for anybody. Suggestions, ideas, or opinions by anyone and everyone are all welcome. I want this club to be super flexible and chill. I don't want anyone to be left out or treated differently."
The OAR flyer has a list of prospective ideas and events planned for their club, as well as their meeting time, dates and location. Their contact information can also be seen on the flyer.
