To honor those who were affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, the Center for Leadership and Service (CLS) will be hosting a Community Service Fair on Tuesday, September 13, 2016. The fair will provide information about the service opportunities CLS offers throughout the year and how students can get involved. The fair will take place from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the Miron Student Center (MSC) atrium.
"This service fair is to encourage students to volunteer," comments Susan Figueroa, the Managing Assistant Director for Community Service and Civic Engagement of CLS.
Students will be able to ask questions about each service opportunity CLS hosts, as well as sign-up for any upcoming service opportunities. These opportunities include: Habitat for Humanity, Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Alternate Spring Break and Atria Senior Living. Students will also have the chance to register for a service trip to the 9/11 Museum in lower Manhattan. This trip has a set date of Sunday, September 25, 2016.
In addition, students have the chance to sign-up to be a part of the executive board of a student group that will be dedicated to volunteering. This group has not been formed yet; however, the group will become official when there are enough executive members for the group. The deadline to sign-up to be apart of the group will be in early October.
Anyone who attends the fair will also have the chance to talk to representatives of other organizations like Making Strides Against Breast Cancer and Girls on The Run. There will also be a moment of silence to remember the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks.
The Community Service Fair, though dedicated to September 11, is not only a time of remembering the heroes of that day or honoring the victims that passed, but as Figueroa says it is "also about giving back to the community." At the fair, students will have a chance to create a message for any one of the victims and will be able to deliver the message--along with a flower--to the 9/11 memorial and place it by the victims name.
If anyone has any questions about the Community Service Fair contact CLS by phone at 908-737-5170, by email at serve@kean.edu or visit MSC room 219. For anyone who is unable to attend the fair but is still interested the 9/11 memorial service trip later this month, registration will also be on Cougar Link.
