Among the many clubs and organizations striving for change on Kean University’s campus, the Women’s Circle stands out significantly.
A relatively new presence on the Kean University campus, the organization was established about five years ago by a group of resident students. Today, the organization is in the trustworthy hands of President Angelic Glispie, a sophomore media communication and marketing double major, the group’s Vice President, Amber Williams, a freshman public relations major, and Secretary Aleeyah Oliphant, a sophomore earth science education major.
Women’s Circle promotes women empowerment as well as a close bonding experience for all 15 members of the organization.
“Empowered, is the word that Women’s Circle lives by,” said Glispie.
Women’s Circle is a group of successful and motivated young ladies who wish to put the organization on the map. The on-campus events held by the organization allows both campus residents and commuters to showcase what talents and abilities may be possessed. Events such as these also provide bonding time between the members of Women’s Circle and the rest of the student body.
A short term goal for Women’s Circle is to successfully increase the number of members by the time the semester ends this May. Ideally, Women’s Circle will have grown to a total of 20 members over the course of the next few months.
The group has held three successful events thus far this year. Women’s Organization held a Poetry Night, an event called Think Like A Man and an event called Beauty Con. To finish the semester off, Women’s Circle plans to host the Miss I Am Woman Pageant, although there is no set date yet. An annual Appreciation Ceremony for Kean Women will also be held before the semester ends, although there is no set date for that event at the moment.
The Appreciation Ceremony is a private event where students are recognized for inspirational performance and actions and can only be recommended by faculty or other students for an award.
A long term goal for the organization is to be recognized campus-wide and understood that Women’s Circle is an institution of open arms for any individual.
“[Women’s Circle] plan[s] to have different events that provide women with opportunities to help them with their career path as well as work on themselves as individuals,” says the executive board.
The organization plans to continue reaching out to community institutions and opportunities that will help better the community and bring the members of Women’s Circle closer together. The group mentors at local schools and organizations to emphasize the importance of education to youth. Women’s Circle has previously mentored at the Boys and Girls Club of America as well as a Charter School.
Women’s Circle strives to stand for empowerment and inspiration for the young women of America. Although in comparison to the population of the country, Kean University is a humble number, but every great movement starts somewhere.
