Martin Luther King, Jr. once said that his dream is to one day have his children be judged by their character instead of the color of their skin. He also said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter.” He is a man that no one can forget…the man who played a huge rule in the Civil Rights Movement.
One of the many speeches he gave and that will not be forgotten was done right here on the grounds of Kean University, which was then known as Newark State Teachers College. On February 9, 1961, Dr. King visited the college and gave a speech at the D’Angola Gym located in Harwood Arena. He spoke of equality in a speech titled “The Future of Integration,” as well as committing to a nonviolent civil disobedience.
Kean University is honoring the time that Dr. King visited Kean University in 1961 with a ceremony on February 9, 2016. The event will be starting at 3:00 p.m. and all is invited to come. It will be held in D’Angola Gym in Harwood Arena. Come help celebrate the historic moment and what Dr. King has done to help every man and woman become equal in the United States of America.
