The time has come to experience one of the guilty pleasures New York City has to offer: Broadway. On Sunday, December 13, 2015, the Graduate and Part-time Student Council (GPSC) and Kean Theatre Council are hosting Spring Awakening Bus Trip.
“This play has been reviewed by the New York Times of being a great play, so the Kean community individuals who decided to go will enjoy themselves and those who are possibly on the fence about [going] should go and enjoy a great time,” said Lawrence Owens, third semester master of public administration program student and Treasurer of GPSC.
Those who are attending the Spring Awakening Bus Trip are asked to arrive at Wilkins Theatre Bus Trolley Stop by 12:45 p.m. as the bus will depart at 1 p.m. The bus is expected to arrive back on campus around 7 p.m.
Students are able to purchase up to two tickets and each ticket costs $15. Tickets are available for purchase at Wilkins Theatre Box Office. In order for students to buy tickets, they must have a completed Student Activity Participation Agreement (SAPA) form with them. The form can be found on both the GPSC’s and Kean Theatre Council Cougar Link pages under the tab “Documents.”
What is Spring Awakening about, though? The musical tells the tale of a group of German teenagers in the 1890s as they try to decipher the grey areas of life. Spring Awakening focuses on Melchior, who is described as brilliant and brave, and Wendla, who is a beautiful and Deaf young woman. What makes Spring Awakening a musical like no other is there is a mixture of Deaf and hearing actors, which adds a unique aspect to it. Although not all the actors on stage are Deaf, all of the actors sign so all audience members can follow along. For those sitting in the audience who are not familiar with sign language, there will be hearing actors voicing what is being signed. These actors are simply shadowing the main characters and will be kept out of the spotlight for the most part so the focus is kept on the main actors.
“It [Spring Awakening] continues with the Broadway theme GPSC has had so far this semester with the Chicago play,” Owens said as to why this musical was chosen for this outing. “Plus this theme of Broadway plays has been something that many from the Kean community, specifically the Graduate and Part-Time students, have asked us to sponsor.”
The musical is housed at the Brooks Atkinson Theatre, which is located at 256 West 47th Street, New York, New York.
