On Sunday, September 27, 2015, the annual festival WKU Day was held at Wenzhou-Kean University. It was a really fantastic activity for students to enjoy various games and have a better understanding of campus culture. The event was mainly divided into four parts:
Reality Library
In the morning on September 27, “Reality Library” took place first. It was a platform for students, especially seniors and juniors, to share their own experiences during their years at the university. The listeners had the opportunity to learn and ask questions. Students enjoyed themselves as they sat on the ground, ate delicious snacks, laughed and applauded.
Carnival Games
In the afternoon, carnival games were set up on the campus. Wenzhou-Kean University students enjoyed interesting games such as holding bubble balls, pouring water while blindfolded and rolling sheets. Congying Lin, a freshman, took part in sumo wrestling with a professor. With this game, participants put on heavy game suits. She stated, “Chasing after each other and rolling on the grass made me feel excited that I have integrated in a fun group. All the games need team cooperation so that I met a lot of nice and enthusiastic friends.”
Organization Recruitment
On WKU Day, it was an annual rule for organizations and clubs to recruit new members every year. Each club used their creativity and specialty to appeal new students to join them. For instance, KIWI Campus Media decorated their table with balloons and free-painting, the Traditional Culture Club made moon cakes and the Music Club had some seniors play guitar and sing songs. Because of such wonderful presentations from each club, freshmen said that they felt it was difficult to choose which club to join because all of them were exciting.
Mid-Autumn Festival performances
In the evening of WKU Day, volunteers placed colorful blankets on the ground for students to sit on. As students waited for the splendid Mid-Autumn Festival performances to begin, they saw the night fall and stared up at the sky as the moon became more shining. Lin stated, “The exquisite dancing skills from my schoolmates impressed me a lot. We waved the glow sticks when the singers gave…passionate singing performances; we laughed when the actors acted humorously. The beauty of the moon and the joy of the party created an unforgettable night.”
WKU Day was a good chance for freshmen to understand the university and its community better, as students could gain friendship by building team cooperation through playing games. Mid-Autumn Festival is a day which encourages the whole family to stay together in China. However, students who stayed on campus to enjoy this day withWKU Day with friends got a sense of belonging with their Wenzhou-Kean University family. Happy and fun times are always short, but students will remember that night and hope the new generation can enjoy their college life at Wenzhou-Kean University.
