Kean University is a school that has seen constant revolution and progression through the years. From its early days as the Newark State College, to today with over thirty buildings total and 3 campuses, Kean University has seen major advancement. The reconstruction of one of Kean University’s most prominent buildings will only increase the ever-growing stature of its school spirit and status.
On October 7, 2015 a ribbon cutting ceremony was held in honor of the newly modeled Miron Student Center, formerly titled University Center, as well as the Miron family, their work and association with the campus. The new construction is all thanks to a generous donation from Diane Miron, an alumna from the class of 1961 and her husband Bob Miron. The Miron family is a longtime supporter of Kean University and strives for only the best intentions in terms of campus life and the future of its students.
The event was a formal invitation-only occasion, and was held both inside and outside of Miron Student Center. The ceremony began outside with guest speakers stating their own personal experiences with both Kean University and the Miron family. Nigel Donald, executive president of student organization and senior economics major, spoke on behalf of the student body. “Every day the campus is improving. The idea that Diane was once a student here and walked the same halls as us is truly inspirational to me and I am excited to see what happens next,” Donald stated.
Following Donald was Ada Morell, an alumna from class of 1997 and board of trustee’s member. Morell stated, “Kean [University] has expanded its programs and facilities over the years, and the reconstruction of the [Miron Student Center] has helped to make Kean [University] a better school and keep the evolution going.”
The last guest speaker was none other than the star of the event herself, Diane Miron. Diane spoke of her early days at Kean University back when it was titled Newark State College. She commended her time at the university and shared memories, such as the story of how she met her husband late in her junior year.
Miron stated, “Suppose I never went to college here. My life would have taken a much different path. Fortunately, I did go to college here, and I can proudly say I could not of been more lucky at the path my life has taken because of it. I am honored for all Kean University has done for me and am extremely proud of the renovation to the Miron Student Center.”
After the guest speakers, the party was moved inside, where complimentary refreshments were offered.
Inside, guests conversed about the importance of the event, as well as Kean University as a whole. Carla Willis, vice president of institutional advancement, commented on how the Miron Student Center came to be. “Bob and Diane were annual donors that caught the eyes of both President Farahi and myself,” Willis commented, “We…later invited Bob and Diane to take a special exclusive tour of the university and all of its surroundings. This ultimately led to Bob and Diane wanting to become more involved and help the overall advancement of the campus. We discussed options, and eventually agreed upon what we are celebrating today, the Miron Student Center.”
The Miron Student Center has already taken action with numerous decorative changes, such as a Smash Burger and an Auntie Anne’s in the process of being built. As long as Kean University has the support of its students and alumni, it will continue to flourish. Now with the added support of the Miron family, Kean University is stronger than ever.
