In remembrance of the innocent lives that were lost on September 11, 2001, the center for leadership and service (CLS) will be hosting a service activity and a trip to the 9/11 memorial and museum.
All students attending this trip are being asked to complete a service project before departing to the memorial. The service project will consist of creating an origami paper crane tribute that will be donated to the Voices of September 11th for display. The cranes symbol peace and unity.
“This is an opportunity to give back to the community as an appreciation and to honor those who have fallen and given their lives on this day that has changed America,” said Sabrina Hamilton, service specialist in the CLS office and a junior biology major.
“Many of our volunteers have reported to be impacted by the service and the trip to the memorial. It is a chance to learn all of the facts and to show their support and gratitude for those who have died,” Hamilton went on to say.
Voices of September 11th helps families try to heal. It also helps communities prepare for, respond to, and recover from mass violence and disasters like September 11.
CLS is an office that is dedicated to community service and it has been their mission to make sure a service activity is completed in honor of September 11. In previous years volunteers have stuffed teddy bears that were given to children who were affected by 9/11. Carrying out a service activity in remembrance is “… a way to support the 9/11 community and continue the annual tradition of volunteering on 9/11,” said Hamilton.
Students should meet in Miron Student Center room 228 from 10:30 a.m. until 12:15 p.m. Buses will depart approximately at 12:30 p.m. from the Wilkins Theatre bus stop and arrive back on campus around 6:30 p.m.
The museum is located at 200 Liberty Street, New York. To register for this event click here.
