Every year students and staff get together to celebrate the start of the academic year during Kean Day: Campus Awareness Festival.
Kean Day, which was originally scheduled to take place along the path of Cougar Walk to Hardwood Arena, had to be moved indoors to Downs Hall due to inclement weather. The festival took place from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. and was hosted by the Miron Student Center (MSC) operations and event management.
Kean Day was first created back in 1982, and was “designed to introduce the incoming freshmen class to the services, departments, and student groups that are on campus and available to them,” said Kerrin Lyles, director of the MSC operations and event management.
Over 75 student groups and organizations were present at Kean Day this year. Peter Miller, sophomore business management major, had a table representing his fraternity, Nu Sigma Phi, during Kean Day. He felt it was important to have a table during Kean Day “to get the word out...and give benefits [to the students interested]”.
One of the organizations present at Kean Day was Go! The Graphic Organization (GO). GO felt Kean Day would be a great way to promote their “be you campaign”. John Simons, president of GO and sophomore graphic design advertising major, explained what the campaign is, “We want to drop the labels and make a stand for equality.”
Kean Day is a great way for students not only to get to know the university better but to get to know each other better. “Self-assurance and being able to communicate is a big part of Kean Day,” said Miller.
Among the vendors were also nearby restaurants, eateries, and services including 7-11, Core Power, Red Bull, Body Armor, IKEA, Wells Fargo, and more. Endless sororities and fraternities came out to represent their organization and to speak with students interested in joining Greek Life.
Kean Day continued in the MSC atrium with the 9/11 Community Service Fair, along with a blood drive that was taking place in MSC room 228. During the 9/11 Community Service Fair students were able to learn more ways to volunteer throughout the semester with the center for leadership and service (CLS). Students were able to stuff teddy bears and make paper cranes that will be donated to the Voices of September 11th foundation.
Kean Day is a day that many students will be sure to remember. It was successful day for organizations and students both.
