Defeating cancer is no easy battle; it is an everyday fight that cannot be fought alone. With the efforts of Student Organization and Relay For Life, the Kean University cougars can help take the first steps in the fight to end cancer.

On Friday, April 10, 2015, join the office of student government as they host Relay For Life from 8:00 p.m. – 2:00 a.m. in Hardwood Arena.

Relay For Life raises awareness of the prevention and detection of cancer and provides the needed services for those living with cancer. Relay For Life helps raise funds for cancer research in hopes to one day find a cure. Kean University’s first Relay For Life was held in April 2013 in Harwood Arena.  Relay For Life is an overnight organized fundraising walk where teams of people gather together to honor a cancer survivor or remember a person who unfortunately lost their battle with cancer. Individuals are not required to stay for the whole time. Members of each team take turns walking around the designated path for the duration of the event. Cancer never sleeps and Relay For Life demonstrates that the people walking will not sleep until a cure is found.

Relay For Life is a family-friendly environment and every relay consist of a survivor lap and a luminaria ceremony.  The evening will include food, music, games, and lots of fun activities—as well as fundraising opportunities. “We have a lot planned…We will be incorporating the swimming pool—a race against our mascot Relay Ralph—and other recreational activities throughout the event,” said Smithwrick.

The student government office hopes to bypass the $15,000 they raised last year. “This year our financial goal is to raise at least $20,000 and we are aiming for have at least over 350 participants in attendance on the day of the event.  We have a lot of teams so far, and actively encouraging students and the community to make more,” announced Smithwrick.

Spaces are limited so be sure to invite family, friends, or anyone that might be interested. “This is open to the public and we want to get the community involved…Plus Relay For Life counts as community service hours, and what Kean University student doesn't need those?” said Smithwrick.
