There are a lot of perks of becoming a college student. Students can decide how many classes one would like to take per semester, what major to study in, and, of course—especially those who live on campus—freedom from the rules that a  parental figure sets in the house. Well, along with the many perks a person may receive by becoming a college student, comes several downsides and one of them includes gaining weight.

Many people don’t like going to gym to exercise as it becomes very repetitive, which eventually becomes boring. Kean University does offer free access to the gym located in Harwood Arena, but students can also begin taking a variety of exercise classes that are a part of the Fit To Be Kean [FTBK] program. FTBK includes many exercise classes that include Cardio Kickboxing where students can lose about 500 to 750 calories in one hour, Yogalates were students can lose between 217 and 400 calories, as well as a few Zumba classes. “Exercise classes are free with the convenience of being right on campus [and] at various times throughout the week in Downs Hall, Dining Room three,” Anthony Brown informs, a graduate assistant at Health Services and majoring in global master of business administration [MBA]. “ In elaboration, Brown claims, “[FTBK] features certified trainers who ensure that all students workout safety, reach their potential and [of course] have fun. It is a great way to invigorate your week.”

Beginning in 2009, the FTBK is a great way for students to stay in shape. Brown continues to say that “all students are welcome and encouraged to participate, especially if [a student] is new to exercising.” These classes will give the chance to students to incorporate different exercising routine in their daily lives. “Physically, students will burn fat, strengthen muscles, and improve their cardiovascular health,” says Brown. He continues to inform that these classes are a great way for students to stay proactive, as well as prevent several health problems, such as heart disease and diabetes. Not only that but exercising students will also be able to “burn stress, sleep better, and [one of the best parts,] make a new friend in the process. The stress relief will definitely help with handling papers, midterms, and finals.”

If a student is interested in any of the FTBK classes, all classes are held only during fall and spring semesters. Students only need to attend a class with their Kean University student identification card [ID] and a water bottle or anything that replaces electrolytes.
