Going to college, earning a degree worthy of a chosen profession, only to struggle at times to pay the tuition bill; college and its endeavors are no easy feat. At times it is challenging being a college student, and students who have experienced the previous scenario are not alone. The office of scholarship services wishes to relieve some of the monetary drain and support students while on their path to earning a world-class education. Attempt to lessen the financial burden of attending college by applying for a Kean University Foundation Scholarship.

As it stands now, there are nearly 300 scholarship opportunities for Kean University students via this application, and out “Of that number, more than 350 were awarded to students last year,” said Brian Treanor, director of the office of scholarship services. All of the scholarships have their own criteria that applicants must fit in order to become recipients of the awards.

One might wonder who decides who will receive any number of the prestigious awards, and the answer would be a campus-wide volunteer committee. The Foundation Scholarship Application Review Committee wishes to provide students a world-class education, and it is comprised of Foundation Board members, current and retired faculty, staff, and alumni. Treanor clarifies that “Besides academic performance, scholarships offered through the Foundation also take into account other vastly important areas of focus such as financial need, community service, volunteer work and faculty references. In short, they look at the big picture.”

Applicants should be prepared to answer questions concerning their financial standing. Another requirement to successfully complete the Kean University Foundation Scholarship application is two recommendation letters from the likes of professors who can attest to the applicant’s character. The chosen recommenders will be sent an email containing a link that leads to some questions asked about the applicant along with being asked to provide a recommendation letter.

Students should be advised that as Kean University is a National Collegiate Athletic Association [NCAA] Division III member institution, there are rules in place prohibiting the awarding of financial aid and/or scholarships based upon athletics criteria. Thus Kean University is prohibited from awarding financial aid and/or scholarships based upon athletic ability, leadership, participation, or performance.

The timeline of the scholarship process is as follows:

Sunday, March 1: Applications due

Wednesday, April 15: Incoming freshman scholarship decisions rendered

Monday, June 15: Undergraduate and graduate scholarship decisions rendered

Wednesday, July 15: Scholarship acceptance letters due

July 15 – August 1: Awarded scholarships accessible on student’s KeanWISE account

“I believe that each and every Kean [University] student should be online applying for a Foundation Scholarship, because while academic merit obviously plays a significant role, it doesn't always necessarily tell the entire story,” Treanor states. Tuition should not be a constant stress; college has too many stresses as is. Students should apply and see what happens.
