MISSY IN ACTION

Laura Pointon

Even when she’s on the basketball court, Kean University Senior Missy Magyar specializes in taking her opponents to school. During her 2 years at Kean, Missy has accepted and excelled in her role as student athlete. As guard for the Women’s Basketball Team, Missy has established herself as a standout competitor on the scoreboard as well as in the eyes of spectators. After averaging over nine points and three assists a game, she has received the honor of Female Athlete of the Month for December. Currently for the season, Magyar ranks second on the team in scoring with 11.3 points per game, while leading the squad in assists with 69 and three-pointers with 43. Missy is pursuing a degree in Health and Physical Education; she anticipates a graduation date of December 2005. Prior to entering Kean, Missy played basketball for Middlesex Community College while earning her Associate’s degree in Physical Education. Her basketball roots can be traced back to her days as a 5 year old. She started playing basketball because it was fun, competitive, and in Missy’s’ words, “I love it”. Her dedication to athletics, especially basketball, proves that it is not just a hobby for her; it’s a passion, a necessity. This avid sports fan currently coaches softball for her former high school Bishop AHR. As for the future, she plans to teach Health and Physical Education as well as coach softball and basketball. Despite being excited about moving on after Kean she is still sad about her last year. Even though Missy has to leave Kean, and her college basketball career, she will take with her unforgettable memories like beating The College of New Jersey during the 2003/2004 season, the team trip to Virginia over this past holiday break, and of course being named Female Athlete of the Month. The memories are still being made as we speak, considering the rest of the season Missy states, “The team is young, but improving; during playoffs Kean should prove to be competitive.”

Missy is made up of more than college and athletics, the details are as follows. Her role models are her older brother Jerry and BIG DAWG. She loves the movie Dirty Dancing and her color of choice is Brown. Last but not least Missy Magyar leaves us with the most important fact of all “I love my dog Rocky, he’s my baby.”

Don’t miss your chance to catch the Women’s Basketball Team in action throughout the month of February.
